A box culvert is a rectangular RCC structure, cast as top slab, base slab, and side walls in a single precast section, placed end to end under a road, highway, or rail embankment to carry water, traffic, or utilities across the crossing.

What Materials are Box Culverts Made From?
Reinforced cement concrete (RCC), typically M30 grade or higher, with TMT steel reinforcement.
What’s the Difference Between Precast and Cast-in-situ Box Culverts?
Precast units are manufactured in a factory, cured, and transported ready to place. Cast-in-situ units are formed and poured on site. Precast is faster to install and holds tighter dimensional tolerances; cast-in-situ has a place on early-stage greenfield alignments without traffic disruption constraints.

By internal width × internal height (B × H) in millimetres. A 1500×1400 unit has a 1500mm clear width and 1400mm clear height.
What Sizes of Box Culverts Are Available?

What’s the Difference Between B and B1?
B is the internal (clear) width; B1 is the overall external width, including both side walls. The same logic applies to H and H1 for height.
Can Box Culvert Sizes Be Customised?
Yes, custom openings outside the standard chart are possible, though they typically require new formwork, which adds cost and lead time. Checking whether a slightly adjusted standard size works is worth doing before committing to a custom dimension.
What is a Multi-cell Box Culvert?
A box culvert with two or more parallel cells separated by an internal wall, used where the flow needs a wide opening but available depth won’t allow a single tall cell, or where the span is too large for an efficient single-cell top slab.
When is a Multi-cell Box Culvert Used Instead of a Single Cell?
When hydraulic area is needed across a wide, shallow profile, when the span would otherwise require disproportionately thick slabs, or on wide watercourses where multiple smaller cells follow the flow profile more naturally than one deep one.
What Concrete Grade is Used for Box Culverts?
M30 and above is standard for infrastructure-grade box culverts; the specific grade is set by load class and exposure condition.
What Reinforcement is Used?
TMT steel reinforcement, with bar diameter, spacing, and cover determined by the structural design for the selected load class.
Load Class & Structural Design
What Load Classes Are Box Culverts Available in?
Box culverts are produced across multiple structural ratings depending on the application: service-lane loading, highway carriageway loading, and rail formation loading, each of which requires different wall thickness and reinforcement.
Is the Load Class the Same as the Size?
No. The opening size and the structural load class are specified separately. A given opening is typically available across more than one load class.
What Load Class Do I Need for a Highway Project?
Highway carriageway loading, rated for full commercial vehicle traffic. Confirm this against your project’s structural drawing rather than assuming a class based on the opening size alone.
Can the Same Size Be Supplied in Different Load Classes?
Yes. The same internal opening can be cast with different wall thickness and reinforcement to suit different load classes. This is exactly why confirming the class separately from the size matters.
What Determines Wall Thickness?
Primarily, the load class and the cover condition above the culvert. Wall thickness doesn’t scale in a straight line with opening size; it steps up as the structural demand from the cover load increases.

What Joint Types Are Used Between Box Culvert Units?
Plug-and-socket with an elastomeric rubber gasket is the standard joint, sealed with mortar at the groove.
When is a Flange-bolted Joint Used Instead?
Where a mechanically fixed connection is preferred, often for groundwater conditions or specific design requirements. It’s available for specific sizes, not the full range, so check availability against your selected dimension.
What Foundation Does a Box Culvert Need?

Does Foundation Design Change With Culvert Size?
Yes. Bedding thickness scales with culvert width, since a wider unit spreads its load over a larger footprint and needs a correspondingly thicker, wider bed.
Why Does Bedding Quality Matter So Much for Box Culverts?
Voids or soft spots beneath a wide box section are more consequential than under a narrow channel. Differential settlement under a wide base can crack the unit or open the joint face rather than just tilt it.

Generally yes. Box culvert units are heavier than open-channel drainage sections, so placement typically needs a crane of adequate capacity, using the unit’s cast-in lifting anchors.

What is the Minimum Cover Required Before Traffic Can Cross?
This varies by load class and cover condition. Confirm the exact figure against your structural drawing rather than assuming a standard depth.
Why Does Backfill Need to Be Symmetric?
Backfilling one side of a box culvert ahead of the other creates an unbalanced lateral pressure differential that can shift or rotate the unit. Both sides need to be built up together, in matched layers.
Do Box Culverts Need Headwalls?
For drainage and crossing applications, yes, headwalls and wingwalls at the inlet and outlet control scour and retain the embankment fill. For cable or utility routing, a simpler sealed end chamber is usually sufficient.
Can Box Culverts Be Installed in High Water Table or Wet Ground Conditions?
Yes, with dewatering before bedding placement and, in some cases, a concrete bed instead of granular bedding. This needs to be planned into the site programme rather than discovered mid-excavation.
