Collected rainwater from rooftops, paved yards, or drainage channels is routed through a filtration chamber to remove silt and debris. It then enters the ring-lined pit, where it gradually infiltrates into the surrounding soil and replenishes the aquifer below.
The rings hold the pit wall against soil pressure. The gravel packing inside manages the filtration. Neither works without the other.

Location matters too. A pit sited in a low-permeability zone, or too close to a foundation, will underperform regardless of product quality.
