U Drain T25 vs T6 vs FT Flume: Which Precast Drain is Right for Your Project?
Choosing between U Drain T25, T6, or FT Flume depends on many factors including load, flow, location, cover type, maintenance access, safety, sizes, pricing, utility requirements and long-term site performance. The correct decision ensures no drainage failures a few months into the project handover or no expensive replacements.
This guide compares three commonly used precast concrete drainage systems with overlapping names and similar shapes, yet different applications and merits:

Precast Drainage Products 101: What These Actually Are
U Drain T25
U Drain T25 is a reinforced cement concrete U-shaped channel engineered to carry a ~5-tonne wheel load. “T25” refers to this load class, not the size. A T25 can be 300×300mm or 1200×1200mm; the load class is determined by wall thickness, reinforcement density, and concrete grade, not the internal opening alone.
T25 units are manufactured in M30 grade concrete with wall thicknesses ranging from 80mm to 130mm depending on size. The reinforcement is heavier than T6; both the vertical wall steel and the base slab reinforcement are designed to resist bending and shear forces generated by vehicle wheel loads passing directly over the covered drain. Connection is via groove joint filled with sealant. Units carry inbuilt lifting inserts.
Available sizes: 300×300mm through 1200×1200mm. Covers in three types: standard perforated, extra perforated, and no-hole for cable ducts. Anti-skid finish lid eliminates the need for paver block.
U-Drain T6
U-Drain T6 carries the same U-shaped cross-section as the T25 but is engineered for lighter loading i.e. pedestrian traffic and light motor vehicles, with a live load surcharge of 2.4T/m². Thinner walls (50–80mm), M25 grade concrete, lighter reinforcement. It sits at the edge of the road with kerb stone, not within the carriageway. Lighter per unit, faster to install, and 20–40% cheaper per metre than the equivalent T25 size.
The T6’s second application is as a cable duct and utility corridor. When fitted with sealed (no-hole) covers, the T6 forms a protected enclosed channel for power cables, fibre optic lines, and ICT infrastructure running alongside roads, within airport campuses, or through industrial zones. It is a more accessible, easier-to-maintain alternative to HDPE pipe for cable routing because the cover can be lifted for inspection without excavation.

FT Flume
The FT Flume is a large-format precast U-shaped channel with a ribbed external wall structure. These ribs provide structural stiffness at large section sizes while reducing overall weight for handling and installation. This is the engineering rationale: at 1500mm, 2000mm, or 2500mm internal width, a solid-walled channel would be impractical to lift and place on site. The rib structure solves that.
The FT Flume carries a pedestrian load rating with a live load surcharge of 2.4T/m². It is positioned at the road edge: shoulder drain, canal edge, or drainage corridor running parallel to the carriageway, not within the trafficked road surface. For applications where the drain must sit within or be crossed by vehicular traffic, T25 is the correct product regardless of channel size.
Connection is via grouted groove joint with galvanised flange bolt connection: a more robust system than standard U-drain jointing, appropriate for the larger section sizes. Lifting requires special crane arrangement; standard inbuilt inserts are not used at FT Flume scale.
Cover types: standard perforated (stormwater), no-hole (cable ducts), extra perforated (stormwater). Anti-skid finish lid eliminates the need for paver block.
Applications: high-volume stormwater drainage, canal management, ICT ducting, and cable rack infrastructure at scale. Available sizes: 600×800mm to 2500×1800mm.

When to Use Each Product
Specify T25 when:
- The drain is in, adjacent to, or likely to be crossed by any vehicular traffic, including construction vehicles during the project
- The project is an NHAI road, state highway, airport service road, or industrial zone internal road
- The drainage channel runs through a logistics park yard or any area with heavy goods vehicle movement
- The project specification explicitly states a vehicular load requirement
- You are uncertain about future traffic loading. When in doubt, T25 is the safer specification
Specify T6 when:
- The drain runs along a pedestrian footpath, cycle track, or residential road with confirmed light traffic only
- The application is a cable duct or ICT corridor with no-hole covers and no vehicle crossing
- The drain is a secondary collection channel feeding into a larger T25 main drain
- The project is an enclosed campus (school, hospital, residential development) with controlled vehicle access
- The BOQ needs to manage cost and the design engineer has confirmed T6 is adequate for the loading environment
Specify FT Flume when:
- The drainage channel needs to manage high stormwater volumes beyond the hydraulic capacity of 1200×1200mm T25
- The channel runs at road shoulder or canal edge; parallel to but not within the carriageway
- The project is a major highway shoulder drain, canal lining, or large-scale stormwater outfall system
- The application combines drainage and utility corridor functions in a single large-format channel
- The project is a smart city drainage masterplan or airport perimeter drainage system where flow volumes are high and the channel location is road edge
Cover Selection Guide
Standard perforated cover: open stormwater drainage. Allows surface water ingress. Standard on roads, highways, and urban drainage networks where rainfall collection is part of the design function.
Extra perforated cover: higher perforation rate for applications requiring faster surface water ingress. Used where runoff volume is high and standard perforation creates surface ponding.
No-hole cover: cable duct and utility corridor only. Keeps the channel fully enclosed and protected. Mandatory for any T6, T25, or FT Flume channel carrying cables or ICT infrastructure.
In all cases: cover load class must match channel load class. Anti-skid finish on all BRHCInfra covers eliminates the need for a separate paver block layer over the drain.
