What Is a Box Culvert and What Is a Pipe Culvert?

Box Culvert

A box culvert is a rectangular RCC structure cast as top slab, base slab, and side walls in a single precast section. The flat profile recovers more clear opening within limited cover depth than a circular shape can, which is why it’s the default choice wherever headroom between the invert and the road formation is tight.

The standard connection is a plug-and-socket joint sealed with an elastomeric gasket; flange-bolted connections are available for specific sizes where a mechanically fixed joint is preferred. Units are placed using cast-in lifting anchors and a crane. The size range spans compact utility-grade sections through large single- and multi-cell sections for highway and rail crossings.

RCC Pipe Culvert (NP2 / NP3 / NP4)

An RCC pipe culvert is a circular precast concrete pipe, manufactured to IS 458 and classified by load duty: NP2 (light duty, for drainage and irrigation use and cross-drains carrying light traffic), NP3 (medium duty, for cross-drains carrying medium traffic), and NP4 (heavy duty, for the highest traffic and cover combinations). The class is determined by wall thickness and reinforcement, not by diameter, the same way T25 and T6 work for U-drains.

Pipes connect via spigot-and-socket or flush/collar joints sealed with a rubber ring. Standard diameters run from small irrigation sizes up to roughly 1800mm for the largest NP4 sections, though most road and drainage culvert applications fall well within that range. At small and medium diameters, pipes are lighter and faster to place than an equivalent box section.

When to Use Each Structure

Specify a Box Culvert when:

  • Headroom between the design invert and the road formation is limited
  • The design discharge would otherwise need three or more parallel pipes to carry it

  • The crossing sits on a national highway, rail formation, or major drainage corridor with structural and hydraulic demands beyond what a pipe culvert can practically cover

Specify a Pipe Culvert when:

  • Headroom is adequate and the design discharge is modest to moderate

  • A battery of two or three pipes comfortably carries the design discharge within the available trench width
  • The application doesn’t need to carry utility or cable infrastructure alongside the drainage function

Pipe Class Selection Guide

NP2 (light duty): drainage and irrigation use, and cross-drains carrying light traffic only.

NP3 (medium duty): cross-drains carrying medium traffic, where NP2 wall thickness isn’t sufficient for the cover and load condition.
